YOUR FIRST VISIT

Come climb with us!
No reservations needed.

Whether you are a beginner looking to try climbing for the first time or an experienced climber pushing your limits, our gym offers a welcoming space to learn, train, and connect.

What to Expect

Waivers & Orientation

  • All visitors, including spectators, are required to fill out a Visitor Agreement.

    • You must be 18 years or older to fill out a waiver. Legal Guardians must fill out waivers for children and teens under 18.

  • All individuals, regardless of age and climbing experience, will receive a facility orientation upon their first visit.

    • This orientation will cover gym amenities, general rules, and bouldering. Orientations will be tailored to the person/group’s experience level. If you would like to do any roped climbing (auto-belays, top rope, and/or lead), you must ask staff to receive further orientations/tests.

  • New Climbers: If you are brand new to climbing (or have no belay experience) you will be able to boulder and/or auto-belay during your visit. We will teach you how!

Climbing Gear

  • If you plan to bring your own gear, such as a harness or lead rope, it must be UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) certified and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations (e.g. within its recommended lifespan). Greater Heights staff has the right to refuse gear that does not meet these requirements.

  • If you do not own your own gear, we’ve got you covered! Our rental package includes shoes, chalk, and a harness.

Auto-Belays

  • Before using auto-belays, you must receive an auto-belay orientation from our staff and demonstrate competency with clipping in and falling. If you have never used an auto-belay before, our staff will show you how!

  • The weight minimum for auto-belays is 22 pounds and the maximum is 309 pounds.

Belay Tests (Tope Rope & Lead)

  • If you know how to belay and would like to top rope and/or lead, you must pass a test and receive your tag(s) in order to belay. Visit the front desk to get certified!

    • After you pass your test(s), your Greater Heights belay tag(s) must be displayed at all times when belaying.

  • We require that all belayers—for both top rope and lead—use an Assisted-Braking Belay Device or ABD (ABDs are available to rent/buy in the gym if you do not own one).

  • You may not practice the same day as a belay test. Come in ready to test!

    • If you practice and proceed to ask for a test on the same day, staff reserves the right to deny your test. We want to ensure belayers are confident in their skills and that information has been stored in their long-term memory. The safety of all climbers (and belayers) is our number one priority—especially when people are 40ft in the air!

    • All practice must be supervised by a Greater Heights Staff member. Visit the front desk, we’re happy to help!

  • You must be 14 years or older to top rope belay.

    • Climbers of all ages are able to climb top rope if belayed and tied in by someone who holds an active top rope certification at Greater Heights.

  • You must be 16 years or older to lead climb. All lead climbers must pass a top rope test prior to taking a lead test.

    • You must pass both the climbing and belaying portions of the lead test to get certified in lead climbing.

  • If you do not know how to belay, gym staff cannot instruct you and test you out on the same day. If you would like to learn, you may register for a top rope or lead class here.

FAQs

  • We do not have an age minimum to climb in our facility. In fact, our youngest climbing team includes 4-year-olds! Climbers between 22 pounds and 309 pounds can use auto-belays.

Participants younger that 14 must be actively supervised by an adult at all times.

  • Nope! We are open for walk-ins from 10AM-10PM every day of the week. Your first visit orientation will cover general rules and techniques needed to get started. The orientation will be tailored to the person/group’s experience level.

If you want more in-depth, personalized coaching, we do offer private instruction. However, it is not required by any means!

  • Nope—we welcome first-time climbers everyday! Our staff will get you geared up and teach you the basics of bouldering and/or auto-belays.

If you are a new climber interested in learning how to partner rope climb (top rope & lead climbing), you can register for a class here.

  • Comfy activewear and a water bottle are recommended. Many climbers find long pants more comfortable when in a harness for climbing!

  • At Greater Heights, we require that all belayers use an Assisted-Braking Belay Device (ABD). ABDs are designed to automatically pinch the rope when a climber falls—locking the rope in place.

    1. Climbing Shoes: Climbing shoes are a specialized type of footwear designed specifically for rock climbing. Climbing shoes typically have a tight fit, and a sticky rubber bottom. The purpose of these shoes is to give the climber a sticky, precise edge to improve the ability to stand on small feet. We require all participants to wear climbing shoes while on the wall. Why we require climbing shoes.

    2. Climbing Harness: A climbing harness is an important piece of equipment that allows a climber to tie into the safety of a rope. It is a necessary piece of equipment which is absolutely mandatory at Greater Heights when climbing auto-belays and all forms of rope climbing (top-rope and lead).

All harnesses must be UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) certified and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations (e.g. within its recommended lifespan). Staff has the right to refuse gear that does not meet these requirements.

    3. Assisted-Braking Belay Device (ABD): We require Assisted-Braking Belay Devices (ABDs). We do not allow ATCs or other tubular devices.

    4. Chalk (recommended but not required): Climbing chalk is a substance that rock climbers use to dry their hands and increase the friction of their skin to rock. Put simply, chalk helps with a climbers grip, and is an essential tool to improve your overall climbing ability, akin to skiing with waxed and sharped skis. Chalk is commonly made of an magnesium carbonate composite. While chalk is an important tool in a climbers tool belt, it is not required at Greater Heights.

  • Nope! If you are new to climbing, and do not own your own gear, we have you covered. We have rentals available to get you started. Our rental package includes, shoes, a harness, and chalk.
