Top Rope and Lead Belay

Certification

Anyone that wants to belay on our top rope and/or lead routes must pass a test.

  • All tests are performed on a first come, first serve basis. Visit the front desk to get certified! A climbing partner is recommended.

  • We require that all belayers—for both top rope and lead—use an Assisted-Braking Belay Device or ABD (ABDs are available to rent/buy in the gym if you do not own one).

  • You may not practice the same day as a belay test. Come in ready to test!

    • If you practice and proceed to ask for a test the same day, staff reserves the right to deny your test. We want to ensure belayers are confident in their skills and that information has been stored in their long-term memory. The safety of all climbers (and belayers) is our number one priority—especially when people are 40ft in the air!

    • If you need to practice, it must be supervised by a Greater Heights staff member. Ask at the front desk for help!

  • You must be 14 years or older to top rope belay.

    • Climbers of all ages are able to climb top rope if belayed and tied in by someone who holds an active top rope certification at Greater Heights.

  • You must be 16 years or older to lead climb & pass a top rope test prior to taking a lead test.

    • You must pass both the climbing and belaying portions of the lead test to get certified in lead climbing.

  • If you do not know how belay, gym staff cannot instruct you and test you out on the same day. If you would like to learn, you may register for a top rope or lead class here.

  • If you plan to bring your own gear, such as a harness or lead rope, it must be UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) certified and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations (e.g. within its recommended lifespan). Staff has the right to refuse gear that does not meet these requirements.

  • Greater Heights belay tags must be displayed at all times when belaying.

We require that all belayers use an Assisted-Braking Belay Device (ABD) for both top rope and lead.
