Join us on Saturday, October 25th for our first competition—Greater Frights! Whether you’re new to competitions or looking to throw down in the finals, this top rope competition is your chance to test your skills, push your limits, and have some Halloween-themed fun.

The competition will run in two sessions—one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Sessions are not split based on skill division or category, so sign up for whichever you prefer. They are each capped at a certain number, so sign up ASAP to get your preferred time slot!:

Morning session: 9:00AM-12:00PM

Afternoon session: 1:00PM-4:00PM

The Morning Session currently has less registrants (if you are looking for a quieter, more spacious climb!)

Sign up for one of the following divisions: Recreational, Intermediate, or Advanced/Open. If you need help deciding which division is best for you, see the FAQ section at the bottom of this page. Within each division, you can compete in the Male, Female, or Gender Non-Conforming category.

After both sessions are finished, the top 3 competitors from each Recreational and Intermediate category will be awarded with prizes at 4:45PM! You do not need to be present to claim your prize. However, you must be able to pick up your prize within 2 weeks from the competition.

The top 3 competitors from each Advanced/Open category will compete in a flash-format finals for prizes! Finals will begin at 5:30PM and everyone is highly encouraged to stick around. Not only to support the finalists, but also to enjoy FREE pizza and beer provided by our friends at Pizza Hut and Delta Beer Lab respectively. There will also be N/A drinks. Let’s keep the gym loud, supportive, and full of good energy as we close out the day.

Family friendly Halloween costumes are absolutely encouraged! We will be holding a costume contest with prizes for the top three best-dressed participants at 5:00PM right before finals. Whether you’re climbing or spectating, come dressed to impress!

To make the day run smoothly, we’re looking for volunteer belayers for both sessions. If you’re interested in helping out, please reach out to us at info@ghclimbing.com. If you are competing, you can belay other competitors. All belayers must hold an active Greater Heights top rope tag.

FAQ

  • If you can project (with regular success)…

    5.7-5.10 = Recreational Division

    5.10+-5.12- = Intermediate Division

    5.12 and up = Advanced/Open Division

  • No, Greater Frights is open to people of all ages! However, climbs won't necessarily be set with our tiniest climbers in mind, so we recommend that they be 8 or older to compete.

  • Early Bird registration is $40 for members and $50 for non-members (now through October 5th). Standard Registration will be $50 for members and $60 for non-members (October 6th-Competition Day). The cost of registration includes rental equipment and your very own Greater Frights T-Shirt!

You must register Early Bird to be able to select your t-shirt size. Anyone who registers after October 5th will not be guaranteed to get their correct size.

  • No! We will have volunteer belayers at the competition. Other competitors are also able to belay you.

  • Yes—in fact we would love it if you did! If you would be willing to belay your friends and other competitors on competition day, please check “yes” next to the question on the registration form. All belayers MUST hold active Greater Heights belay tags and obtain them PRIOR to competition day. We will not be performing belay tests on competition day.

  • For capacity reasons, we encourage people over the age of 18 not to bring guests. That said, our strict maximum is 2 guests per competitor during the Morning and Afternoon Sessions. During Advanced/Open finals, there is no guest limit. Gentle reminder that non-competitors are not allowed to climb during the competition. The gym will re-open to the public from 7:00PM-10:00PM. Non-members and non-competitors will need to purchase day passes if they plan on staying after finals end at 7:00PM to climb.

  • After the afternoon session ends, and the Advanced/Open finalists are selected, there will be a brief pause in action.

You are welcome to stay, participate in the costume contest and other activities, and find your spot to watch finals. We will also start handing out pizza and beer during this time. If you are a spectator, please allow competitors to serve themselves first!

  • No, Greater Frights is a top rope only competition. There will be no lead climbing this year!

  • Unfortunately, you will not be able to climb on routes between qualifying rounds and finals.

  • Yes, from 7:00PM-10:00PM we will be open for regular hours.

  • Please consider carpooling to the competition or getting dropped off! If you have ever been to the gym on Tuesday or Thursday night, you know what you’re up against. Carpooling, Ubering, or having someone drop you off will help reduce parking lot hecticness.

If the parking lot is full, you will need to park along Novation Parkway or street parking in adjacent neighborhoods. Please DO NOT park in lots of neighboring businesses.

Although we hope everyone has a seamless competition day experience, we suggest arriving earlier rather than later—as you may have to park off site and walk.

  • Refunds will be granted on a case-by-case basis for extraneous circumstances only. Please email info@ghclimbing.com if you will not be able to attend the competition and feel this applies to you.
