Lead Summer Camp Counselor
Job Description:
Greater Heights is excited to announce openings for experienced and motivated Part-Time Lead Summer Camp Counselors to join our team! As a Lead Counselor, you will take on a leadership role in creating a fun, safe, and well-organized camp environment where kids can build confidence, make friends, and develop a love for climbing and movement. Lead Counselors are responsible for guiding daily camp operations, supporting staff, and ensuring each camper has a positive and engaging experience.
Who is Greater Heights Climbing?:
Greater Heights Climbing is a community-driven climbing gym located in Madison, Wisconsin, that opened its doors in December 2024. We are focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive space for climbers of all ages and skill levels. Our mission is to inspire, educate, and bring the joy of climbing to the local community. We are looking for dedicated individuals who are passionate about the sport and committed to providing a safe, fun, and enriching environment for youth climbers.
Our summer camps combine climbing, games, team-building, and creative activities to give kids an unforgettable experience for children ages 6–16.
Expectations:
Report directly to the Programs Manager
Serve as the leader for assigned camp groups and daily operations
Maintain professional and appropriate behavior at all times, including when not actively leading activities (appropriate language, representing the gym positively, etc.)
Support, guide, and communicate clearly with Camp Counselors
Act as a positive role model and trusted adult for all campers
Create a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for all participants
Foster teamwork, respect, and encouragement among campers and staff
Bring energy, organization, and leadership to each day of camp
Responsibilities:
Lead daily camp schedule, transitions, and overall flow of activities
Supervise campers and ensure safety at all times, both on and off the wall
Oversee and support counselors in games, climbing sessions, and group activities
Ensure activities are engaging, organized, and age-appropriate
Provide direction and support to Camp Counselors
Monitor camper behavior and take the lead in addressing conflicts or concerns
Communicate with parents as needed regarding camper experience or issues
Manage daily setup, cleanup, and overall camp organization
Ensure all gym safety policies and procedures are followed
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Strong leadership and decision-making skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to manage groups and maintain structure in a high-energy environment
Confidence in handling challenges and problem-solving in real time
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to mentor, support, and guide other staff members
A positive, approachable, and professional demeanor
Qualifications:
Previous experience working with children in a leadership role (camp, coaching, teaching, etc.)
Interest in climbing and basic knowledge of climbing terminology and etiquette
Ability to lead groups and manage multiple responsibilities
Maintain required certifications, including SafeSport training (provided or completed upon hire)
First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
Availability during summer camp hours, with the expectation of working full camp weeks (Monday–Friday) for either morning or afternoon sessions during scheduled weeks
Compensation & Benefits:
$13-16/hour based on experience
