Adult Climbing Coach

Job Description: 

Greater Heights is excited to announce an opening for a passionate and enthusiastic Adult Climbing Coach to join our growing team! As an Adult Climbing Coach, you will play an important role in guiding this new program and providing a supportive environment to ensure a positive and rewarding experience for all athletes. 

Who is Greater Heights Climbing: 

Greater Heights Climbing is a community-driven climbing gym located in Madison, Wisconsin, that opened its doors in December 2024. We are focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive space for climbers of all ages and skill levels. Our mission is to inspire, educate, and bring the joy of climbing to the local community. We are looking for dedicated individuals who are passionate about the sport and committed to providing a safe, fun, and enriching environment for all climbers. 

Expectations: 

  • Maintain open communication with the Greater Heights leadership team. 

  • Report directly to the Head Coach and Programs Manager. 

  • Contribute ideas and feedback to help shape adult climbing programs as the gym grows. 

  • Collaborate with other coaches and staff to support adult programming, events, and gym operations. 

  • Create a positive and encouraging environment. 

  • Foster an atmosphere of respect, safety, teamwork, and inclusivity. 

  • Sign and uphold the Coaches Code of Conduct.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and instruct adult climbing sessions, emphasizing technique, training, engagement, and community. 

  • Provide individualized coaching to climbers, adjusting instruction to meet each participant's skill level. 

  • Promote teamwork and communication among climbers during group activities. 

  • Support climbers in achieving their climbing goals and encourage personal growth. 

  • Monitor participant behavior and address any concerns related to discipline, or gym rules. 

  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as needed. 

  • Supervise the climbing floor, ensuring that all gym rules are being followed. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to work with adults in a positive, supportive manner. 

  • Enthusiasm for the sport of climbing and a desire to share that passion with others. 

  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to different skill levels and learning styles. 

  • Patience, empathy, and a strong sense of responsibility for the well-being of climbers. 

  • Willingness to learn and grow in the role, with opportunities for growth, training, and development. 

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. 

  • A positive and approachable demeanor that makes team athletes feel comfortable and excited about climbing. 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 2 years of experience training and educating climbers, or comparable experience. 

  • Ability to multitask and stay organized during busy sessions. 

  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain certification). 

  • Flexibility in scheduling, with availability to work evenings and weekends. Currently, there are 2 adult teams: one meets Wednesdays from 7-9PM and one meets Saturdays from 8-10AM.

  • A love for the sport of climbing and an eagerness to share it with others. 

  • Must be proficient in both bouldering and roped climbing (lead certification and experience required).
