Summer Camp Counselor

Job Description:

Greater Heights is excited to announce openings for enthusiastic and energetic Part-time Summer Camp Counselors to join our team! As a Camp Counselor, you will play a key role in creating a fun, safe, and engaging environment where kids can build confidence, make friends, and develop a love for climbing and movement. 

Who is Greater Heights Climbing?:

Greater Heights Climbing is a community-driven climbing gym located in Madison, Wisconsin, that opened its doors in December 2024. We are focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive space for climbers of all ages and skill levels. Our mission is to inspire, educate, and bring the joy of climbing to the local community. We are looking for dedicated individuals who are passionate about the sport and committed to providing a safe, fun, and enriching environment for youth climbers. 

Our summer camps combine climbing, games, team-building, and creative activities to give kids an unforgettable experience for children ages 6–16. 

Expectations:

  • Report directly to the Camp Lead Counselor and/or Programs Manager 

  • Collaborate with fellow counselors to create a positive camp experience 

  • Act as a positive role model and trusted adult for all campers 

  • Maintain professional and appropriate behavior at all times, including when not actively leading activities (appropriate language, representing the gym positively, etc.) 

  • Create a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for all participants 

  • Foster teamwork, respect, and encouragement among campers 

  • Bring energy, enthusiasm, and creativity to each day of camp 

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and engage a group of campers throughout the day

  • Lead and participate in games, climbing sessions, and group activities

  • Ensure camper safety at all times, both on and off the wall 

  • Help facilitate climbing activities in a fun and approachable way 

  • Encourage participation, confidence, and teamwork among campers 

  • Monitor behavior and address conflicts or concerns appropriately 

  • Assist with daily setup, cleanup, and organization of camp activities 

  • Follow all gym safety policies and procedures 

  • Communicate with Lead Counselors regarding camper needs or concerns

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Ability to work with children in a positive, supportive manner 

  • High energy, enthusiasm, and creativity 

  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and camper needs 

  • Patience, responsibility, and strong awareness of safety 

  • Team-oriented mindset and willingness to help wherever needed 

  • A positive and approachable demeanor

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children preferred (camps, coaching, childcare, etc.) 

  • Interest in climbing and basic knowledge of climbing terminology and etiquette 

  • Ability to stay active and engaged throughout the day 

  • Maintain required certifications, including SafeSport training (provided or completed upon hire) 

  • First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain) 

  • Availability during summer camp hours, with the expectation of working full camp weeks (Monday–Friday) for either morning or afternoon sessions during scheduled weeks

Compensation & Benefits:

  • $12-14/hour based on experience
